The Significance of the City of Makkah in Islam

1. Masjid al-Haram

Masjid al-Haram (The Sacred Mosque) is the world’s largest mosque, encompassing the Holy Kaaba at its center. 3. Maqam Ibrahim

Maqam Ibrahim is a stone bearing the footprint of the Prophet Ibrahim. It was preserved from when he stood upon it while constructing the upper portions of the Kaaba. This sacred relic is located near the Kaaba, and pilgrims are encouraged to pray two Rakats behind it after completing Tawaf.

The relic represents the physical connection to Prophet Ibrahim’s devotion and labor in building God’s house, serving as a tangible reminder of the prophetic heritage that pilgrims inherit.

4. Hijr Ismail

Hijr Ismail is a circular wall adjacent to the Holy Kaaba which marks the area where Prophet Ismail and his mother Hajra A.S are believed to be buried. According to the Islamic tradition, this area was originally part of the Kaaba, but was excluded during its many reconstructions after on.

Praying inside the Hijr Ismail is said to be highly rewarding to the point it’s considered praying inside the Kaaba itself by many. During the ritual of Tawaf, Muslim pilgrims must go around the outside of the Hijr Ismail and not cut through it, to ensure their circumambulation is complete.

5. Zamzam Well

The Zamzam Well is a highly famous spring of water, which produces the sacred water that miraculously sprang forth when the Prophet Ismail was saved by Allah’s mercy through the angel Jibril, when his mother Hajar was searching for water. It is located within Masjid al-Haram and its water is available at the Holy Mosque for pilgrims to drink.

All Muslims believe that the miraculous Zamzam water carries many blessings and healing properties and they all bring it with them after Hajj or Umrah to give to their neighbours or family members. The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) described it as blessed water and food that satisfies all believers.
