What is Umrah?

Who is Elgibile to Perform Umrah?

- For an accepted pilgrimage, the pilgrim must have crossed puberty.

- The pilgrim must have enough financial resources to cover the cost of the trip. This includes accommodation, airfare, transport, transfers, food, and miscellaneous expenses.
- A valid visa and passport are essential requirements for Umrah. Otherwise, the person may be deported from the airport, which can be very disturbing.
Umrah Rules
Ihram
Ihram is the white piece of clothing that Muslim men wear when they embark on the Umrah journey. For women, it is modest clothing. Ihram is not just clothing, but a state of divine purity. Without Ihram, the Umrah cannot be valid. Here are some Ihram rules which serve as the rules of Umrah.
The following things are forbidden in the Ihram.
- Clipping of nails.
- Cutting hair.
- Using fragrance in any form, be it soap, lotion, perfume, or shampoo.
- Applying make-up.
- Wearing jewelry.
- Wearing flashy clothes.
- Sexual activity.
- Hunting or killing animals.
If a pilgrim violates any of the rules unintentionally, he must compensate for it immediately. This can be done by paying the penalty or offering a sacrifice. The amount of the penalty depends on the gravity of the offence.
Umrah Rituals
Umrah rituals are as follows.
Assuming Ihram and Making Intention
The pilgrim must assume Ihram before he reaches Miqat. He must also make an intention to perform Umrah to please Allah. Intention is extremely important in Islam. Allah judges actions by intentions. A person must intend to earn Allah’s favor by performing Umrah. He must not perform Umrah to impress any individual or gain any worldly benefit. Only those who perform Umrah with a pure intention reap benefits from the journey.
Tawaf
Tawaf is the circling around the Holy Kabah. The pilgrims make seven anticlockwise circumambulations around the Kabah. Each circuit begins at Hajr-e-Aswad. Tawaf rules require men to walk briskly in the first three circuits. In the remaining circuits, they can walk normally. During tawaf, the pilgrims must recite supplications. They must not push each other. They must be focused on pleasing Allah with their sincere worship.
Sai
Sai is the walking between the hills of Safa and Marwa seven times. With this ritual, the Muslims pay tribute to the unwavering faith of Hazrat Hajra. Sai begins at Safa hill while facing the Holy Kabah. When the light turns green, men must walk briskly. During Sai, the pilgrims must recite supplications and pray to Allah for whatever they wish.
Halaq
Finally, the pilgrims shave their heads to mark the end of their pilgrimage. This ritual is called Halaq. Females cut a lock of hair. Those who do not wish to shave their heads completely can evenly trim their hair. This is called Taqsir.
Mistakes to Avoid
It is very important to strictly abide by the Umrah rules. Failure to do so can invalidate the pilgrimage. Here are some common mistakes to avoid.
- Some men violate the Ihram rules by wearing stitched clothes or belts having pockets. Doing so can invalidate Ihram, thus making your Umrah futile.
- Sometimes, people miss the count of rounds while doing Sai. Make sure you keep a track of your rounds.
- Arguing, quarreling, using foul language, or holding a grudge against someone while performing Umrah violates Ihram rules.
