Step-by-Step Guide to Rukun Umrah for First-Time Pilgrims

For first-time pilgrims, understanding the essential steps of the Umrah rituals is crucial to completing the pilgrimage correctly and meaningfully.

There are four main rukun for performing Umrah, and each will be mentioned step by step in this blog to help you prepare for your pilgrimage with knowledge and confidence.

But first, let’s discuss what Rukun Umrah is.

What Is Rukun Umrah?

The word rukun is an Arabic word that translates to “pillar” or “main principle”. Which means that the phrase “Rukun Umrah” refers to pillars or actions that make your Umrah valid, and missing any one of the rukun or misperforming any action will mean that your Umrah is not complete.
There are four main pillars or essential steps of the Umrah rituals every pilgrim must perform:

  1. Ihram
  2. Tawaf
  3. Sai
  4. Tahallul

Each step holds deep spiritual meaning and is performed in a specific sequence. Below is a simple breakdown of each rukun umrah to help you understand and follow the process with ease.

Step-by-Step Rukun Umrah

Step 1: Entering Ihram

Ihram is the state of purity and devotion that begins your Umrah. It is both a physical and spiritual preparation. Before entering this state, you must cleanse yourself, perform ghusl (ritual bath), trim your nails, and wear the special Ihram clothing.

  • For men, Ihram consists of two white, unstitched cloths.
  • For women, regular modest clothing that covers the body is allowed, but face covering (niqab) and gloves should be avoided.
  • Once dressed, you make your niyyah (intention) for Umrah and recite the Talbiyah:

“Labbayk Allahumma Umrah” – “Here I am, O Allah, for Umrah.”

From this moment, avoid certain actions like cutting hair, using perfume, or engaging in marital relations. Ihram symbolizes equality, humility, and surrender before Allah.

Step 2: Performing Tawaf around the Kaaba

After entering Makkah, the next step of the rukun umrah is Tawaf, the act of circling the Holy Kaaba seven times counterclockwise. Tawaf represents the unity of Muslims around the world and their devotion to the one God.

Begin at the Black Stone (Hajar al-Aswad), raise your hand and say “Bismillah, Allahu Akbar,” then start circling. Maintain focus, make duas, and remember that each round is a chance to ask for mercy and forgiveness.

Men perform the Idtiba’ (exposing the right shoulder) and Raml (walking briskly) during the first three circuits, symbolizing strength and enthusiasm in worship. After seven rounds, perform a two-unit prayer (raka’at) near the Maqam Ibrahim if possible.

Step 3: Performing Sa’i between Safa and Marwah

The third rukun umrah is Sa’i, which means walking back and forth seven times between the hills of Safa and Marwah inside the Masjid al-Haram. This act commemorates Hajar (AS)’s search for water for her son, Prophet Ismail (AS), and it reminds pilgrims of patience and faith in Allah’s mercy.

Begin at Safa Hill, face the Kaaba, and make dua. Then walk towards Marwah, reciting prayers or reflecting quietly. Between the two green lights, men are encouraged to walk briskly, while women maintain a normal pace. Once you reach Marwah, that’s one round. After seven rounds, Sa’i is complete.

Step 4: Shaving or Cutting the Hair (Tahallul)

The final rukun umrah is Tahallul, where you shave or trim your hair as a symbol of humility and renewal.

For men, shaving the head completely (halq) is preferred, though trimming (taqsir) is also acceptable.

For women, a small portion of hair, about a fingertip’s length, from the end of each braid should be trimmed.

After Tahallul, you are now out of Ihram, and all previous restrictions are lifted. Your Umrah is complete, Alhamdulillah!

Understanding the rukun umrah, the essential steps of Umrah rituals, is vital for every first-time pilgrim. It helps ensure that your spiritual journey is performed correctly and with full devotion.

As you prepare for your pilgrimage, learn these steps thoroughly, keep your intentions pure, and approach each act with gratitude and humility.
